Chapter 1: Going to China—The introductory chapter is divided into 3 segments. It describes Charles' excitement about going to China, tension and discord between him and his girlfriend, the feelings of inspiration to represent the U.S., and his airport experience in Beijing (6 photos).
Chapter 2: Dongbei Yucai School—This chapter is a detailed account of Charles' experiences teaching at the top boarding school in China. This facility has a strenuous student schedule and high academic achievements. At this school, he demonstrated various teaching methodologies and developed a unique teaching style (7 photos).
Chapter 3: Living in Shenyang—The book's third chapter details a history of this ancient city in Northeast China, the lifestyle and social life of foreign English teachers, Charles' first Chinese girlfriend, learning and understanding the Chinese culture, and finding marijuana growing in the wild (21 photos).
Chapter 4: Hard Times in Shenyang—In this chapter, Charles explains what is was like meeting Chinese dignitaries, living a rich lifestyle and subsequent loss of income from program cancellation, the SARS epidemic, experiencing economic difficulty, and his motivation to develop an educational service company in China (8 photos).
Chapter 5: Formulating A.E.T.T.—Chapter 5 spells out how Charles developed a series of picture vocabulary assessment instruments that measure how well a Chinese person understands English. It also explains the basis of his educational testing and training company. Chapter 12: Living in a Communist Society—The final and most poignant saga begins with a look at communism and China's socio-economic classes. It focuses on China's rapid economic development in preparing for the 2008 Olympics games, and the dismal year for the rich. Charles discusses the impact of the global economic crisis, giving an overview of the bleak employment outlook. He also gives us a riveting tale of being incarcerated in a Beijing detention center, and the inspiration he received from the Robinson Crusoe novel and his hero, Nelson Mandela (25 photos).
Overview—The overview explains how Charles audaciously experimented on new repertoires and innovations in his teaching. His mission was to bridge the gaps between cultures, providing him with a humbling and fulfilling opportunity.
